background: rgb(255, 226, 63);\"><\/highlight><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">The San Juan River was not only a natural frontier: it was the <strong>decisive scenario<\/strong> where Costa Rica&#8217;s survival against William Walker&#8217;s filibuster project was defined.<br\/>Between late 1856 and early 1857, Major <strong>M\u00e1ximo Blanco Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> led some two hundred Costa Rican soldiers along this strategic river corridor, from the interior of the country to the Caribbean, capturing steamships, forts and controlling the inter-oceanic route.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">This map traces, <strong>from left to right (west to east)<\/strong>, the key points of this forgotten campaign <strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd Origin of the expedition: the interior of Costa Rica<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>San Jos\u00e9 \u2192 San Carlos Pier<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">The feat did not begin on the river, but on land.<br\/>From <strong>San Jos\u00e9<\/strong>, the Vanguard Column undertook a grueling march to <strong>Muelle San Carlos<\/strong>, on the upper reaches of the <strong>San Carlos River<\/strong>, a tributary of the San Juan.<br\/>This overland journey marked the beginning of an extreme logistical operation, carried out without naval support, without sufficient resources and in adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd Entrance to the river theater<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Boca del Rio San Carlos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">At the <strong>confluence of the San Carlos River with the San Juan River<\/strong>, the Costa Ricans first entered the center stage of river warfare.<br\/>Here the <strong>first indirect contact with filibustering forces<\/strong> occurred, and the advance eastward downstream began.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd First strategic points of the middle river.<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Old Castle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Former Spanish colonial fort, deteriorated but still symbolic.<br\/>Its capture allowed the Costa Ricans to consolidate their presence in the middle stretch of the river and to prepare operations of deception and capture of enemy steamers.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Raudal del Toro<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Area of dangerous rapids, key to river ambushes.<br\/><strong>Naval deception<\/strong> operations took place here, including the famous curtain maneuver on the steamer <strong>Bulwer<\/strong>, which allowed captures without firing a shot.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Machuca<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Critical river crossing, used by filibuster steamers to transport troops and supplies.<br\/>Its control reduced enemy mobility upriver.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd Influents and logistical control<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>San Carlos River<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Fundamental tributary for the connection with the Costa Rican interior.<br\/>Guaranteed human and material supply from the Central Valley.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Colpach\u00ed Estuary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Swampy area near the delta, used as a secondary road and natural refuge.<br\/>Important for discreet operations and concealed movements.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sarapiqui River<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Although not directly part of the San Juan, it was <strong>key as an alternative transit route<\/strong> and logistical support.<br\/>It connected the interior with the Caribbean and reinforced Costa Rican pressure on the Transit Route.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd The heart of the campaign.<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>La Trinidad<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">This was the nerve center of the campaign.<br\/>This is where the <strong>first direct confrontation<\/strong> with the filibusters took place and the main Costa Rican camp was established.<br\/>From La Trinidad, the capture of steamers was coordinated, troops were reorganized and constant pressure was maintained on enemy logistics.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">It is also the place to which <strong>M\u00e1ximo Blanco was forced to return<\/strong>, by order of General <strong>Jos\u00e9 Joaqu\u00edn Mora<\/strong>, once the capture of the fort upriver was consolidated.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd The Caribbean and the Transit Route<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Greytown \/ San Juan del Norte<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Caribbean port and eastern end of the river.<br\/>Here the <strong>first filibuster steamers<\/strong> were captured, interrupting the Transit Route that connected the Atlantic with the Pacific and sustained William Walker&#8217;s power.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">The control of Greytown meant the <strong>logistical collapse of filibustering<\/strong> in Nicaragua.<\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udccd The decisive move upstream.<\/h2>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Fort San Carlos<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"\">Located at the outlet of the river from <strong>Lake Nicaragua<\/strong>, it was the most strategic point of the entire river system.<br\/>After capturing steamers in the Caribbean, the Costa Rican forces <strong>sailed<\/strong> upstream <strong>against the current<\/strong> to take the fort.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">At the end of 1856 and beginning of 1857, <strong>Fort San Carlos passed into Costa Rican hands<\/strong>, sealing the total control of the San Juan River.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">This was the <strong>highlight of the campaign<\/strong>.<highlight style=\"border-radius: 3px; background: rgb(255, 226, 63);\"><\/highlight><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Strategic epilogue &#8211; The decision to survive<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">After securing the <strong>Fort of San Carlos<\/strong> in late 1856 and early 1857 -consolidating Costa Rican control of the upper San Juan River- Major <strong>M\u00e1ximo Blanco Rodr\u00edguez<\/strong> was not &#8220;forced to withdraw&#8221; from the campaign, as later simplified in some accounts.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">On the contrary, it <strong>received the order to cover again La Trinidad<\/strong>, a neuralgic and exposed point of the fluvial line, <strong>but without the minimum necessary resources<\/strong> to sustain that position. From San Jos\u00e9, the political power celebrated the successes of the Vanguard Column and capitalized on its victories, but <strong>did not send sufficient reinforcements, food or ammunition<\/strong>, nor did it guarantee a basic logistic chain for the survival of the men stationed on the river. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">In La Trinidad, Blanco and his little more than two hundred soldiers were <strong>isolated<\/strong>, sick, poorly fed and with increasingly precarious weaponry. Faced with the evidence that the permanence meant the silent annihilation of his troops &#8211; not by the enemy, but by abandonment &#8211; <strong>M\u00e1ximo Blanco made an extreme but responsible decision<\/strong>: to abandon the position as an <strong>act of collective survival<\/strong>, prioritizing the lives of his men over blind obedience to impossible orders. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">This decision, taken under extreme conditions, would mark the beginning of Blanco&#8217;s <strong>political and symbolic displacement<\/strong> within the official narrative. While San Jos\u00e9 continued celebrating the captures of steamers and the strategic achievements of the Transit Campaign, the commander who had made them possible was progressively <strong>unprotected, isolated and, finally, silenced<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"\">It was not a military retreat.<br\/>It was the price of having won too far from the center of power.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The San Juan River with the key points of the Transit Campaign.
